This study aimed to characterize glycemic levels and metabolic risk factors among faculty members at the Regional University Center of Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University (BICU) in El Rama, Nicaragua. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach, with a descriptive and cross-sectional design. Variables related to metabolic health and lifestyle were assessed, including body mass index, physical activity, sleep quality, personal and family pathological history, and frequency of preventive medical check-ups. Data were collected through a structured survey, complemented by anthropometric measurements and fasting capillary blood glucose tests, applied to 39 active faculty members of the institution. The results revealed relevant metabolic risk conditions: 49 % of faculty members reported a family history of diabetes, 73 % were overweight or obese, 38 % stated that they did not engage in regular physical activity, more than 60 % reported sleeping fewer than seven hours per day, and 64 % indicated that they did not undergo periodic glycemic monitoring. Regarding glycemic levels, 30.7 % presented impaired fasting glycemia, and 15.3 % recorded values suggestive of diabetes. The findings show a metabolic risk profile that highlights the need to strengthen institutional strategies for health promotion, early detection, and prevention of metabolic diseases in the university setting.
